The cover of Kurt Tucholsky's first novel Rheinsberg: A Picture Book For Lovers, published in 1912 when he was just 21 years old. It was inspired by an amorous weekend he spent in this resort town 46 miles (73 km) north of Berlin with Elsa Weill in 1911. The manuscript was refused by all the publishers Tucholsky submitted it to because it transgressed the then-existing limits of respectability. Eventually, the publisher Axel Juncker bought all the rights to it for 125 marks. It was published on November 12, 1912 and by 1932 120 thousand copies had been sold. While Tucholsky received no royalties from the sales it did establish his reputation as a writer.
